The Somers Mutiny occurred on November 26, 1842, aboard the U.S. training brig SOMERS, while en route from the African coast to New York. Acting-Midshipman Philip Spencer, a son of the secretary of war, and two accomplices were hanged on December 1, after a trial by a shipboard court of inquiry and at the urging of the captain, Alexander Slidell Mackenzie.
